Ashley warner for December 19th

For our final project I worked in a group with Karen and Calvin. At first it was difficult to come up with an idea, we brainstormed together and came up with a few but we all agreed it would be great to do our book on the events of 2016. We tried thinking of a title but decided it was best to come up with it after we finished the other pages. This worked out well because once we saw all our contributions as a whole the title tied it together.

Originally we were going to use actual imagery for each event and edit them. After speaking with the professor he gave us the idea too try doing our own sketches. We thought that would be way more interesting and unique. We wrote out a list of things we thought were the most memorable and important events of 2016 and divided them into 6 each. We did our sketches and colored them in on photoshop and then came up with our captions, fonts and sizing. Overall our sketches blended well with each other and was visually very interesting.

What I gained from this project was being reminded of the things that happened in 2016 and touching up on my drawing. I used to draw more often but find myself not doing it anymore so this was great for me. What I would change if I did this project again would be to add in more events and make the book longer. Also change the order of the images. We realized after we sent our document to print that the one spread we had should have fell on a different page.

Our finished product came out really good. We used MagCloud and followed their specs for print through their website. The cost for the print was really cheap and we paid for express shipping. In total we paid about $7.50 each. We chose to do a saddle stitch book with glossy paper. They produced it perfectly, nothing was cut off and we were nervous about the numbers being too close to the bottom, so I’m happy about that. Overall I’m satisfied with the way our book came out and I enjoyed working on it with my group. I know that other people will find it interesting and in some parts amusing. They will either be reminded or informed about the events that happened this year.

Thank you professor for a great class! I enjoyed each project and now I have three books with my name on it 🙂

Ashley Warner for December 5th

For this week, my group and I (Calvin and Karen) worked on our images. We each did six drawings on paper and then scanned them in to add color, etc. We also came up with headlines for our sketches and body copy. As a whole we chose a background for the pages and a typeface for the body copy. For the headlines we chose fonts that matched the topic on each page. Our book is about events that happened in 2016 so we wanted to make sure everything was descriptive and easy to identify with.

Ashley Warner for November 14

For the midterm project I worked with Amanda and Evelyn. We worked well as a group and never had any issues. We split the work up and got most of it done in class. Once we chose the topic of GMO’s the design direction took off pretty fast from there. We were all very interested in the topic and had the same opinion on it. To describe my role in the process I would say I was the creative director. We all did good research and found a way to put it together so that our book made sense and was easily understood. I loved the outcome and I think we did well putting it together. The most successful element was our design and the weakest, based off of the feedback, was that we didn’t have enough personal opinion.

With the other publications I think everyone had great designs and interesting topics.  The one about Donald trump was the most interesting to me and it was successful. The design was very colorful with a lot of imagery but it worked well and I liked that it was folded brochure style. I also liked the design of the publication for vegan food because of the colors and layout. All of the publications worked well but these stood out more to me. The only thing I would change or adjust would be having less text on each page.
If I had to start this project over I would definitely want to have more of my groups personal opinion on the topic. Even though I feel like we put enough, it could have been more towards the start so that as soon as you start reading the publication you will know what side we’re on. Other than that I really loved the turn out, especially the design and how well we worked together on it. An idea that I have for another publication is to go more in depth about the long term effects of GMO foods. We had some information about it but this new publication would be entirely about the effects it has on babies and children’s development.

Ashley Warner for October 24

I want to start off by saying that I really enjoyed the production of our mini-zines. Everyone worked really hard to make sure everything got done fast and correctly. It was good to see that everyone looked out for each others work as if it was theirs, making sure it was put together with as little mistakes as possible. Although there were errors, everyone’s work looked great in the end.

As I went though all the mini-zines, some stood out more to me after actually reading them. I like the poem in the gemstone book and the fact that there was a credit to the author in the back. The imagery in “New Yorker’s on the Subway” was funny and its easy to relate to because we have seen people do weird things on trains. The illustrations in “The space adventure” book was well done and the black and white works perfect for it.

Surprisingly there wasn’t any recurring motifs in the zines, everyone had there own style. It’s always good to see how someone else chose to do their project and get ideas for another time. What I would do differently if I had to do this project again is to make sure I put even larger margins so that none of my text or imagery gets cut off. I thought I had enough but if there’s a next time I think I could get it to be perfect. Another thing I would do differently is do way more test runs to make sure everything’s in the right place. That was one thing I messed up on but other than that I was satisfied and enjoyed working on this project.
