Amanda Protain for December 19

For my group’s final project, I am actually happy with the quality of our work. It looks exactly like what we had on screen, which is amazing. It has just the right amount of pages, too.

During our group discussion, it was really hard picking a topic. Within the first 2-weeks, one person was always missing so our thoughts were not so clear and precise. Eventually we got together and decided to do a book about food. Since food was such a vague topic, it gave us an opportunity to learn about each person’s cultural background. This also led us to cultural foods in our own neighborhoods, because we are familiar with our community.

Everyone contributed the same amount of work, because we all conducted our own research, imagery and writing style. We brought our work to class to compare and contrast, choosing what works and does not work. The challenging part about the assignment was when we didn’t receive any guidelines, so picking a topic took us a while. Also, our layout was super hard. We referred to magazines, advertisements and cook books to for inspiration.

The finished book looks amazing. If we were to go back and change anything, it would be to make our files bleed and make the cover slightly larger. I am actually impressed to see our own personal ISBN number added as well.

My team and I will be finalizing the book title, dimension and print facility. Today, we are working on our separate portions for our sections. Alicia will be the designer for each neighborhood photo representation. Rainie will design the book cover and I will design the table of contents spread. Amanda Protain for November 14

For my midterm project, I worked with Ashley and Evelyn. The topic we discussed was, should products be labeled if it contains GMO. Everything went well from beginning to end, because we all agreed on each aspect. During our research process, we were able to find information quickly. We shared important facts together and organized each detail while drafting our spread. My role was to cover the design elements of images of rotten crops and to research how safe GMO is and its possible effects.

The most successful element of our publication are the images and color scheme. The colors bring our text to life with an organic look which is food related. Our images became a big impact by displaying the importance of the issue to bring awareness to our readers. The weakest point of our publication may have been the yellow pages with green text, or the thin typeface we chose.

My favorite publication is MILK: Join the Moovement. The color choice and organic designs were repetitive and memorable. The bold, chunky typeface and different bottle shapes made the book look very interesting. The group members had a reasonable amount of information, as well.

If I started this project over, I would make my own illustrations. This will give me the opportunity to use my skills. Overall, I enjoyed working with my group on this project.

Amanda Protain for October 24

For our first assignment, the mini zines turned out to be a rewarding experience. My expectations changed once the design aspect came to life. Coming up with ideas were much easier than putting together a small piece that should be visually engaging and also easy to read. I mostly had trouble with printing the double-sided layout. Multiple pages were wasted during the test run until I was satisfied. The ending result of my zine was on a scale of 6/10.

Overall, my classmates did a great job. Each one was different and had its own tone. One of my favorites were “The Space Adventure.” I overheard that the artist hand drew all of his illustrations, which was produced differently from others. The type treatment worked well and the typeface of choice fits the subject. Some illustrations were designed as a spread to continue on going action which framed the text copy perfectly.

For my project, I would change the amount of imagery used. I wanted mine to portray a digital version of a collage, but product details would have been left out if I decided to overlap most of the images. The body copy was big enough for legibility, but it would of have been better if I made the font size 9 pts or 10 pts. Decreasing the margins for my documents would have a better result as well. This will allow my text to be more centered and away from the edges during the cutting process.
